Tell Me A Story

The purpose of this blog is for students at Sequoia Middle School to use mathematics to tell stories about the world around us. The assignment will be as follows:

7th Grade

You must post an example of digital media and interpret the story graphically. You must then explain your graph verbally. In order to earn a "C" on this assignment, you must do the following:

  • Create at least three (3) blog posts. Each post should contain the following: Digital image(s) still or dynamic (video); A graph of your story; An explanation of your graph (You may use Smart software to create the graph and upload the graph as an image) and a written explanation of how your digital image is interpreted mathematically.

  • Comment on at least 10 of your classmates' blog posts. Make sure your comments are constructive. If you like the post, tell them why. If you thought the post could have been better, tell them why. Don't just give fluff comments like, "that is awesome" and leave it at that. Offer constructive feedback.

  • Submit only your best work. You should have at least two of your classmates review your work before you post it to the blog.

8th Grade

You must post an example of digital media and interpret the story graphically. You must then explain your graph verbally. In order to earn a "C" on this assignment, you must do the following:

  • Create at least three (3) blog posts. Each post should contain the following: Digital image(s) still or dynamic (video); A graph of your story; An explanation of your graph (You may use Smart software to create the graph and upload the graph as an image), an input/output table of key points, any equations that are represented on your graph and a written explanation of how your choice of digital image is interpreted mathematically.

  • You should have at least one post that tells a linear story, one quadratic and one of your choice (you can be creative with this one).

All posts should be titled and contain tags. The tags allow us to search the blog for content based on certain criteria. For example, if you are in the 7th grade, your post should have the tag "7." Each post should also contain your first name and initial. For example, "DavidC." If your post has a specific topic like "linear" or "quadratic" be sure to include that tag as well. You can include other tags if you like.

You should keep your post in "draft" mode until you have had it edited by at least two peers. Once you are sure that you have done your best work, publish your post.

You should keep a log of your posts and comments on the Mathematical Storytelling spreadsheet in Google Docs.

Final due date will is yet to be determined.
